Chiropractic Care for Migraines

Chiropractic Care for Migraines

What’s going on with Migraines

It is one of the most common complaints in the Netherlands: Migraines.

More than a quarter of a million people in the Netherlands suffer from (regularly recurring) migraine attacks. Among them are relatively many women and middle-aged or just slightly younger.

There is a wide range in the severity and frequency of attacks but everyone who suffers from migraine is affected by the condition in one or more areas.

After all, migraine is not a condition that just disappears spontaneously. In addition, the cause of migraine is also only partially clear and the symptoms can be diverse.

You understand, when dealing with a condition that presents both different challenges, it is important to turn to a party that is actually familiar with the issues.

Because migraine can consist of severe attacks of headache combined with hypersensitivity to light but it can also occur in the form of disorientation and nausea with vision loss.

All of the above symptoms are associated with migraine but thus there is a wide range in what symptoms a person experiences and also in how severe these symptoms are.

In individuals who suffer from regular and severe attacks, migraines can have a huge impact on their lives. Therefore, we are pleased that more and more insights into the “how and what” of this disease are emerging which also further increases understanding of appropriate care.

We would like to share some of this new knowledge with you.

THE ROLE OF THE CHIROPRACTOR

The chiropractor is not only involved in complaints, precisely
prevention of symptoms is the specialty of chiropractic….

Migraines: Causes and Symptoms

We already mentioned some of the symptoms and are adding the whole list for completeness.

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tingling
  • Facial loss/spots/blurred vision/aura
  • Sore muscles
  • Dull feeling in limbs
  • Loss of concentration
  • Word-finding disorders

Symptoms often occur in a seizure-like fashion, so there can be wide variations in both severity and quality of symptoms. Headaches and aura are the most common complaints.

So while the symptoms can be very diverse, this is not yet entirely clear for the cause. What has already been established is that migraine is a multi-system problem. For example, the brain is involved. In a migraine attack, the brain temporarily receives insufficient oxygen or energy or just too much / too little neurological stimuli. To this they react strongly and cause the typical symptoms of migraines.

The cause of the oxygen/energy/incentive imbalance seems to develop in the neck region. Blockages (subluxations) can occur here, causing blood vessels to constrict and nerves to be less in contact with the brain. Triggers for this constriction can then again include:

  • Stress
  • Poor nutrition
  • Fatigue
  • Infections
  • Intoxications (alcohol, coffee, etc.)

These above triggers can induce subluxations that trigger migraines.

Therefore, it is always the goal of the chiropractor to correct and prevent the subluxations in order to prevent the migraine, rather than suppressing the migraine attack.

Chiropractic Care for Migraines

Migraine has no “one size fits all” solution. The diversity of the condition also requires personalized care. For this reason, we always begin with a grounding physical examination combined with an examination of any external factors that may be influencing it.

From this then follows a number of leads that the chiropractor can attend to in order to eliminate triggers. The course required to take care of subluxations (and just as importantly, prevent new ones!) varies from person to person.

If you are ready for a definitive care plan for your migraines, we would be happy to get in touch with you to explore with you whether our chiropractic care can provide you with relief.
