The shoulder is an important joint that is therefore used constantly. Shoulder complaints are particularly annoying for this reason. Still, it is estimated that about 30% of the Dutch have shoulder problems at some point every year.
Fortunately, in most cases the pain or stiffness is only temporary, but a substantial proportion of people with shoulder pain suffer from it more frequently/longer.
Chiropractors have traditionally been the specialists not only for the spine, but for all joint problems. So we would be happy to tell you more about our care for shoulder pain.
The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint. This means that there is a thickening (ball) on the bone of the upper arm that falls into a space (socket) of the shoulder blade. This creates a firm but also flexible connection.
This allows the shoulder to move in many directions and has a wide range of motion. To ensure smooth movement, there is a smooth layer of cartilage between the bone pieces. There are also bursas in the shoulder that provide shock absorption. A capsule of ligaments and tendons keeps the shoulder compact and in the proper position.
Finally, there are muscles that provide additional strength and, of course, movement.
This creates a versatile joint that has many possibilities. Unfortunately, all the different parts can also cause complaints.
Because there are so many structures present in the shoulder, a variety of symptoms can also arise. We distinguish many different complaints, but four complaints are above average.
These are:
Bursitis of the shoulder: This is a chronic irritation of the bursa. This causes it to become inflamed, leading to pain and sometimes reduced movement of the shoulder.
Tendinitis of the shoulder: This is a chronic irritation of a tendon that connects a muscle to the shoulder. This causes pain when moving.
Frozen shoulder: In this case, the joint capsule is irritated and swollen. This reduces the shoulder’s ability to move.
Pinched nerve: Insufficient space or overuse causes pressure on a nerve. This causes pain but sometimes tingling or numbness in the fingers.
The first step to good care, is to thoroughly examine the shoulder to identify exactly what is causing the symptoms.
The examination does not just focus on the symptoms. We are much more interested in what causes the symptoms and what factors are involved.
After all, pain within the shoulder can be caused by different structures. We also often see structures irritating each other. When there is swelling from an inflamed bursa, it can also cause extra pressure and strain on the tendons in the shoulder, for example.
Therefore, it is important to properly identify which structures are involved in the complaints. The next step is then to take care of the cause of the symptoms.
Here it is important that the shoulder moves in an optimal and healthy manner. When the movements are performed in the right way by a stable joint, there is enough space for all the structures. Then no bursas or nerves get pinched.
Therefore, we focus on healthy movement and loading of the shoulder, as this offers the most sustainable solution for you.
