Does chiropractic belong to Regular or Alternative Health Care

Chiropractors

These health care providers are often grouped under the heading of alternative medicine. This creates a dichotomy in healthcare. On the one hand, regular medicine, which falls under the close supervision of the state and has to comply with all kinds of regulations, and on the other hand, alternative medicine, where care providers often vouch for their own knowledge and skills.

Chiropractic falls under alternative medicine. At least, this is the case in the Netherlands. In countries like the United States, Australia and Canada chiropractic is a regular medicine. The fact that chiropractic care is not (yet) fully recognized by the government in the Netherlands says nothing about the benefits of chiropractic care. Chiropractic is a relatively young medicine (about 100 years) and is therefore not yet recognized in many countries. This is probably only a matter of time because chiropractic helps so many people.

Tell me, would you rather have a health care provider oversee the quality of care or a government official do it?

How is the Quality of Chiropractic Guaranteed?

Chiropractic care is therefore not part of the care that is recognized by the government. Fortunately, this does not mean that there is no attention to the quality of chiropractic care!

In fact, chiropractic has an extremely strict form of supervision that has stricter regulations in many areas than regular medicine. This supervision comes mainly through the chiropractic (professional) associations such as NCA, SCN and NVSC.

These organizations consist of chiropractors from the field itself. These specialists are thus directly involved in providing the care and therefore have a strong interest in a good name for the target group. Supplemented with lawyers, they therefore provide a self-imposed regulation that oversees the quality of care.

This regulation is also supported by health insurers who only reimburse care provided by chiropractic specialists who provide high-quality care and are members of a professional association. As a result, chiropractors who do not meet the high quality requirements do not receive reimbursement from health insurance, which strongly discourages this policy.

As a result, supervision within chiropractic is actually stricter than for many areas of mainstream medicine.

Benefit of the position in Alternative Medicine

Chiropractic care is probably the most well-known and widely used care that falls outside of mainstream medicine. For this reason, chiropractic is also a form of care that is often compared to other health care providers such as osteopaths and manual therapists.

Chiropractic, because of its position in alternative care, has a unique advantage in that chiropractic is always itself being pushed to provide even more quality.

During training, in addition to a great deal of attention for the medical aspect, attention is also paid to issues surrounding the running of a private practice and ensuring quality. As a result, chiropractors often have a lot of experience in guaranteeing quality and good care even before they start their own practice or before they enter the workforce. The very fact that the government does not provide for this ensures that chiropractic itself is highly regarded and has been able to build up a great deal of expertise in this area.

Therefore chiropractic care is reimbursed by health insurers because these parties see that the chiropractor often provides quality care so that clients of insurers experience better health.

The future of chiropractic

Chiropractic care is growing very fast in the Netherlands. More and more people are familiar with chiropractic care. For this reason it is expected that chiropractic care will eventually join the field of mainstream medicine.

However, chiropractors will always ensure that the internal quality requirements will remain. After all, there is no one who can judge whether the care is of good quality as well as the chiropractor himself in combination with the client.

Because that will always remain the driving force behind chiropractic care: The best possible health for our clients.
