When you are told that you suffer from a worn-out back, you also often hear that there is little that can be done about it. The back is damaged and this damage is permanent. Many people then resign themselves to this.
Unfortunately, not everyone knows that music is definitely not dead yet when you suffer from a worn-out back. In part of the cases, in fact, there is no worn-out back.
When it does, there is often still a great deal possible. There may be damage, but that doesn’t mean the body can’t deal with it in other ways.
Therefore, within our chiropractic practice, you will never hear us say that we cannot help you when you have back problems such as a worn out back.
By a worn-out back is usually meant osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the body damages itself. In the case of osteoarthritis in a worn back, this damage occurs particularly to the cartilage/binding tissue parts of the back.
Therefore, with a worn-out back, there is a reduction in the quality of the intervertebral discs. These become thinner and less elastic. As a result, the intervertebral discs are less able to absorb load, pressure and shock.
This reduces the protection of the vertebrae, which can also cause them to become irritated. This chain of events often creates a local inflammatory reaction, which can cause swelling. This can eventually cause damage to all the structures of the back and increased pressure in the back region.
Muscle cramping and reduced flexibility of the facet joints not only cause you pain, but also make movement less possible. So with a worn out back, you can suffer a lot of pain and reduced mobility.
It is often said that osteoarthritis is an irreversible process. This is true, the damage that is there will remain. But this does not mean that your symptoms will remain in the same intensity.
For example, when your car breaks down or you are no longer allowed to drive, you can no longer take your car to the store. You can think of this as a problem as a result of not being able to drive. But this doesn’t mean you can’t bike to the store, or ride with someone. So there are still all sorts of ways in which you do achieve your goal (going to the store).
This is roughly the situation in your body as well. There is damage that results in pain and reduced mobility. But your body is not one to be taken for granted and can often (partially) cope with these symptoms.
We will first examine whether there is actually extensive damage and whether this damage is due to wear and tear. Once we know the extent of the damage, we can see what this means for you. In what ways does your body suffer from the damage.
In many cases, there are numerous options for back support. This, for example, decreases the strain on the intervertebral discs, reducing pain. By strengthening muscles and moving in a different way, the strain decreases and the inflammatory response diminishes.
This reduces swelling and inflammatory factors, giving the region more space. As a result, there are fewer pinches, spasms or subluxations, greatly improving functionality. Your body absorbs much of the load differently, sparing the damaged parts.
