Chiropractic help for scoliosis in the back

Scoliosis is perhaps the most annoying unnatural curvature of the back. In scoliosis, the curvature is not forward or backward, but sideways. The spine is partially rotated on its own axis.

The curvature usually occurs as early as childhood and can get worse over time. Therefore, it is quite possible that the scoliosis may not begin to cause symptoms for some time. These then often consist of pain in the back or sometimes difficulty breathing. In most cases, symptoms get worse just before or during puberty, as there is a major growth spurt during that period.

With scoliosis, it is important to raise the alarm as soon as possible. The earlier care can be initiated, the greater the chance of recovery.

The development of scoliosis due to unnatural posture

With scoliosis, as mentioned, there is a lateral curvature of the back. This can be caused roughly by two things, either incorrect posture or an overgrowth.

The least serious cause is incorrect posture. When there is disproportionate force acting on spine, it may rotate unnaturally. This could be due to a difference in muscle tone or a pelvic/leg length difference, for example.

This can cause a person to assume an incorrect posture, for which the spine tries to compensate. This can cause the spinal column to be pulled too hard on one side or, on the other side, to have insufficient support. The chiropractor’s therapy in this case is aimed at full recovery by promoting good posture.

A scoliosis due to an enlargement (structural scoliosis) is often more persistent.

What is involved in structural scoliosis?

When there is a true fusion of the spine, we speak of structural scoliosis. The vertebrae have grown crooked in this case; the cause of this may vary. In these cases, the condition is often chronic and therapy is aimed at keeping the scoliosis as uncomfortable as possible. There are four types of structural scoliosis:

  • Congenital (congenital anomaly)
  • Neuromuscular (due to a muscle disorder and/or nerve disorder)
  • Degenerative (due to aging)
  • Idiopathic (cause unknown)

The most common of these is scoliosis of unknown cause. In about 80% of cases, there is no single clear cause. In this case, however, there are often involved factors or compensatory mechanisms on which treatment can be focused in order to still reduce symptoms.

Chiropractic care for back pain due to scoliosis

As you would expect from a chiropractor, treatment will always begin with the cause of the symptoms. What causes the anomalous position? So we always start with a physical examination and possibly imaging techniques such as the Myovision scan.

Based on this information, we can determine the cause of the curvature and whether there are additional factors.

Therapy is then focused on the cause and thus can vary from person to person. When there is scoliosis as compensation for unnatural posture. Then we can use techniques such as squatting to bring the pelvis back into balance, normalizing posture.

With a congenital defect, there are often a variety of compensatory mechanisms involved, causing overcompensation. Balancing the mechanisms, in those cases, provides much relief.

When there is excessive or low muscle tension, we can treat subluxations by cracking the spine, which releases nerve blocks. As a result, muscle tension can normalize.

With degenerative cause, there is often an imbalance of the vertebrae. In these cases, techniques are used to balance the spine as much as possible to eliminate subluxations. So a chiropractor has many options for treating scoliosis.
